May Nature Calendar
Two full moons, Endangered Species Day, and International Permaculture Day
Welcome to this month’s Nature Calendar. Through it, I share conservation, environmental, and sustainability awareness dates happening around the world and throughout the year. While there is nearly a day for everything now, these nature oriented dates can help remind you that in between the major holidays, there are organizations around the world working hard to bring nature to the forefront and awareness dates to remind us of the work that is taking place.
These nature dates range from the littlest organisms, international movements, and the people including indigenous cultures, women, and BIPOC communities that have contributed to caring for the earth.
As you plan your month and are finding activities for yourself or your family to do, consider looking into the links provided for one of these days to learn more.
Learn what you can. Stay curious. Nature is a wonderful teacher.
What to look forward to in May
This month, there are two full moons! The flower moon at the beginning of the month signaling the spring flowers blooming and the blue moon micromoon. Blue for being the second full moon of the month and micromoon being that it is the farthest away from the earth.
As I was putting this together, I learned that there are many awareness themes for this month.
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. For our health, it is Women’s Health Month, Maternal Mental Health Month, Safe Kids Month, Clean Air Month, National Walking Month, National Bike Month
When it comes to the environment, it is National Wildlife Awareness Month, National Strawberry Month, Gardening for Wildlife Month, American Wetlands Month, Responsible Animal Guardian Month, No Mow May, National Wildfire Awareness Month, National Water Safety Month, and National Miniature Garden Month.
Additionally, it’s still the middle of spring which is ripe for everything continuing to bloom and a growing season for all that nourishes us.
Seasonal Foods for Nature Connection
There are many ways that you can connect with nature every day. From the air we breathe, skies we see, and the foods we eat every day.
You can determine what’s available where you live through this seasonal food guide where you can select your state, month, and food.
In our yard, we’ve got strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries waiting to ripen. And around us, many local farms have fruit picking seasons, a great family activity to shop local and source seasonal foods for your family.
Find out if any of your local organizations are hosting events near you to celebrate or if local farms have any fruit picking for the family to enjoy.
